Lunenburg’s Working Waterfront

For centuries the Mi’kmaq, Acadians, and Lunenburgers have all drawn from the bounty of the sea for food and to make a living. The Town of Lunenburg is a place where the maritime culture of the past lives brightly alongside the maritime culture of the present. Our waterfront is beautiful and functional, allowing our fishing and manufacturing industries to cohabitate with tourism and events for a diverse local economy.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Town of Lunenburg is one of only two urban communities in North America designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Established in 1753, the Old Town is the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement, having retained its original layout and overall appearance based on a rectangular grid pattern. Town residents have safeguarded the built heritage by preserving the wooden architecture of the houses, some of which date from the 18th century.
