At the Town Council Meeting of July 27, 2021, a Public Hearing was held on the new Planning documents: the Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS), Land Use By-law, and Subdivision By-law. After the hearing, Council approved the new Planning documents and repealed the old ones.

The documents go to the Province now for review, which is a 90-day process. Once approved by the Province, this will be advertised and the new documents come into effect. Work on the new Heritage Conservation District Plan and Bylaw to align with the Planning documents will begin in September.

The documents are available at www.projectlunenburg.ca or a printed copy for viewing is available at Town Hall.

Lunenburg Town Council approved the CCP's Five-Year Work Plan - summarized in this 35 Actions Summary Gantt Chart.

November 17, 2020

Lunenburg Town Council unanimously approved the Comprehensive Community Plan (CCP) submitted by the Project Lunenburg Steering Team at the Council Meeting of November 17, 2020.

Further, the 35 action items identified in the CCP,  Section 12.11 Implementation and Monitoring are the actions to be implemented for the first five years.

Council directed Upland Planning and Design, to continue onto Phase II of Project Lunenburg. Working from the CCP, Upland will next be drafting a new Municipal Planning Strategy, and revising the Town’s Land Use, Subdivision, and Heritage Conservation District  Bylaws.

Lunenburg’s CCP was written by Upland with extensive community involvement over a period of 18 months. It is intended to provide a blueprint for the Town over the next 40 years, with reviews at five-year intervals to re-set priorities.

“We would like to express our gratitude to the Project Lunenburg Steering Committee, to municipal staff and to the citizens of Lunenburg who inspired and pushed our consulting team to write a plan that we believe deserves to be called ‘comprehensive’,” said Upland partner Steffen Käubler. “Over the last 18 months, we have learned that Lunenburg is a very engaged, very vocal and very creative community and we think you see this reflected in this Plan.”

The planning documents will require further public consultation as part of a legislated formal process, so there is much more to come!

Project Lunenburg

Project Lunenburg is the comprehensive community planning process initiated by the Town of Lunenburg. It’s about bringing people together to set our direction for the years to come.

Project Lunenburg will focused on many important topics:

  • housing
  • transportation infrastructure
  • built heritage and streetscapes
  • recreation and community spaces
  • art and culture
  • environment and sustainability
  • regional cooperation
  • economic development
  • land use policy

The plan set out through Project Lunenburg will take years to implement. As a result, the plan is far-looking and considers not just the expected local and global trends of today, but also of the next 40 years or more. The plan must also have a clear strategy for implementation, with well-defined and achievable steps.

At the same time, a strong plan is not set in stone, and it does not decrease creativity or restrict opportunities. It must be flexible enough to respond to what may emerge in the years to come, adapting to new trends and opportunities, and as the vision for a good community evolves.

The process is overseen by a steering committee of Council members, staff, citizen representatives, and Develop Nova Scotia. UPLAND Planning and Design are the consultants who are guiding the work.

The project team has made a sincere commitment to meaningful community engagement integrated through all steps of the process. All perspectives and experiences are welcome.
