IMPORTANT UPDATE ON MODL’S TEMPORARY WATER RELIEF PROGRAM

Please see this important update from Lunenburg Fire Chief, Darren Romkey, regarding the Temporary Water Relief Program…

“Other years, during a drought, we offered residents the opportunity to come to the Lunenburg Fire Station to fill there water jugs.

We are not allowed to fill wells or any potable containers from our trucks for health reasons.

We are currently in the process of having our cement apron in front of the station replaced.

There are several pieces of heavy machinery and construction workers out front of the hall.

We have to temporarily keep our trucks in the back parking lot.

During a fire call our trucks will exit past the bay door where we normally allow your jugs to be filled.

That, along with members arriving to the station makes it a very congested, busy spot.

Adding vehicles coming in would be unsafe for both residents and fire fighters, as well add to the congestion and possibly delay our response.

If there was no other option, we would have to strongly consider providing this service.

However, the MODL along with the Water Market (237 Victoria Road)  has a program that offers water.

Hopefully we soon get some much-needed rain.”

Starting Monday, August 11, 2025, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg - MODL will provide water coupons for drinking and cooking to residents experiencing dry wells.

Residents can pick up coupons at the Municipal Service Building or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to request them.

The program supplies 4L of bottled water per person per day, up to four 4L jugs per household daily. Coupons can be redeemed at The Water Market.

If you have jugs larger than 4L, multiple coupons can be used to cover the volume. For example, a 5-gallon jug requires 5 coupons, a 4-gallon jug requires 4 coupons, and so on.

PUBLIC WORKS – SAFETY UPGRADES

The Town of Lunenburg’s Public Works Department recently placed concrete safety bumpers in select areas around town. The seasonal bumpers – to be removed during winter months – are an effort to improve public safety during the busier summer months.

It is hoped that the bumpers will allow for more space for pedestrian foot traffic at key intersections. Presently the bumpers can be found at:

  • Both sides of King St. & Cumberland St. intersection
  • Both sides of Rum Row & Bluenose Dr. intersection

Bay-to-Bay and Back Harbour Trail Closures

As per the government of Nova Scotia’s announcement - hiking, camping, fishing and use of vehicles such as ATVs in the woods is banned as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2025, due to an elevated wildfire risk.

Camping in campgrounds is still permitted, but trail systems through woods are off-limits under the new rules. This includes the Back Harbour Trail and the Bay-To-Bay Trail. It does not include the Lunenburg Harbour Walk.

While the restrictions are in place, people can still access beaches and parks, but not the trail systems. Private landowners are free to use their own properties but cannot host others to use wooded areas of their properties.

These and other measures are in place on provincial Crown and private land until October 15 or until conditions allow them to be lifted. The fine for violating the restrictions is $25,000.

OVERNIGHT CAMPING IN LUNENBURG

Let’s talk about BOONDOCKING…

Lunenburg loves visitors and every summer, we look forward to hosting our travelling friends in their campers and RVs, and we encourage them to explore and take in all of the great sights and experiences our town has to offer.

While visiting, we would like to remind visitors that camping in public places in town is prohibited under 4.2(c) of the Public Places By-Law, as it can lead to congestion and impair sightlines for motorists and emergency vehicles. You may have even noticed some of the new signs the Town has put up to help as a reminder.

So, sadly, no boondocking. Lots of other funs things to do while in Lunenburg, we just ask that you make proper plans should you decide to stay overnight.

We have a marvellous campground in town at the Lunenburg RV Park & Campground on historic Blockhouse Hill, as well as the Little Lake Family Campground and the LaHave River Campground – both a short drive from town.

Should you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact our By-Law Officer at (902) 521-6434 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Statement on the Proposed Sale of the Old Train Station (18 Dufferin St.)

On June 24, the Town of Lunenburg’s Council held a public hearing to discuss the proposed the sale of 18 Dufferin Street (commonly referred to as the Old Train Station) to the Second Storey Women’s Centre, a nonprofit that has long leased the Town-owned building.

The proposed sale would see the property sold to the Second Story Women’s Centre at a price below market value - as allowed by the Municipal Government Act - in recognition of the community benefit provided by the Centre.

The proposal stems from a request from Second Story Women’s Centre, as they look to long-term stability by securing a permanent location with no fear of being displaced. The sale would ensure that these vital services remain in Lunenburg and this location provides a unique opportunity for discreet access for clients.

The situation and opportunity are the impetus for this proposed sale. Second Story Women’s Centre, being a non-profit, means that this sale would not require the process of putting out a RFP, as the Town has no interest in selling 18 Dufferin Street to a private developer.
