REMINDER; Nominations for Participating in The Town of Lunenburg Lead and Copper Management Program Close May 30
Over the past few years, the Town of Lunenburg’s Water Utility has been executing our Lead and Copper Management Program in accordance with the Approval to Operate issued by Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change. This program is meant to assess public exposure as well as reduce the exposure of customers if lead or copper levels exceed Health Canada Guidelines. Health Canada has found lead to be a probable carcinogen that can negatively affect cognition and behavior in children. Copper levels exceeding Health Canada’s acceptable concentrations may affect the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and kidneys.
The Town will continue to accept participants to volunteer for the program until the end of the work day on Friday, May 30. Priority will be given to volunteers based on the likelihood of their residence containing construction materials that present a higher risk of containing lead and copper (houses built prior to 1975) though all levels are risk are encouraged to volunteer. Participants may not have point-of-entry treatment devices such as water softeners.
The selected participants will be asked to book a date and time for the utility to take a sample from their kitchen faucet without removing the aerator or flushing the line. Residents may also arrange with the utility to take the sample themselves and have the sample picked up the same day.
Once samples are analyzed by an approved laboratory, the Town will notify property owners within 30 days of receiving the results if there is no lead or copper exceedances. Property owners whose results exceed Health Canada Guidelines will be notified within 14 days of the town receiving results along with precautions available to the property owner to minimize their exposure.

RECOGNIZING ACCESS AWARENESS WEEK
- Details
- Published: Monday, 26 May 2025 16:33
The Town of Lunenburg is proud to be flying the Access Awareness flag in recognition of Access Awareness Week, whose theme this year is Our Voices, Our Votes: Disability Rights in Action.
In it’s 39th year, Access Awareness Week (May 25 – 31) is a public awareness initiative that aims to celebrate achievements made both by and for persons with disabilities in the areas of accessibility, transportation, housing, employment, recreation, education and communication in Nova Scotia.
The foundation of Nova Scotia’s Accessibility Act is to provide, support, and protect the rights of persons with disabilities to full inclusion and accessibility by the identification, prevention and removal of accessibility barriers. Accessibility barriers are many and interconnected, and removing and preventing them is challenging and complex. Through public awareness, community partnerships and education, this campaign aims to foster an environment of equal participation for persons with disabilities in Lunenburg.

REMINDER: Noise Bylaw update & public hearing
- Details
- Published: Monday, 26 May 2025 11:25
This is a reminder that Council is scheduled to consider final approval of a new Noise By-law at its meeting on May 27 at 6:00 p.m. at Town Hall. Before making any decision, Council will hold a public hearing, and residents are welcome to share their feedback on the proposed changes.
This updated by-law is designed to make the Town’s noise rules clearer and easier to enforce. Under the current by-law, staff often struggle to act on noise complaints, not because they aren’t valid, but because the existing rules are too vague to enforce consistently.
What’s Changing?
The proposed by-law includes clear, observable criteria for what qualifies as “excessively loud or disruptive” noise, including:
• Interference with indoor conversation
• Physical vibrations on neighbouring properties
• Audibility from 100 feet during Quiet Hours (11 p.m.–7 a.m.)
• Prolonged or repeated noise without reasonable breaks
The by-law balances community needs by continuing to allow reasonable daytime noise from businesses, marine operations, and construction, so long as it's not excessively disruptive.
Faster, More Flexible Exemptions
Short-term noise exemptions (14 days or less) can now be approved directly by the CAO, without needing Council approval, making the process quicker and more responsive.
Read the draft by-law and staff report (page 8 of the agenda): https://townoflunenburg.ca/council-2025/2025-council-committee-of-the-whole-agendas/1912-05-27-2025-council-agenda/file.html
Want to Speak?
Come to Town Hall on May 27. A sign-up sheet will be available at the start of the meeting for those wishing to speak during the public hearing.
